About 2,700 Eichler homes were built in Palo Alto between 1951 and 1974, in neighborhoods like Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow, Charleston Meadow and Green Gables. That's more than in any other Bay Area city. North of Oregon Expressway, Professorville and Old Palo Alto have homes that are more than a hundred years old.
Neither kind of house works well with standard off-the-shelf doors. Eichlers have unusual sizes and a lot of glass. Older homes have openings that have shifted over the decades. With home values over $2 million, a door that looks wrong is noticeable, so we fit each one to the house.
Original Eichler openings rarely match stock door sizes. A standard door forced into one leaves gaps, drafts, and a look that doesn't suit the house.
After decades of use, Eichler sliders have worn rollers, bent tracks, and latches that no longer lock securely. Sometimes a tune-up fixes it. Sometimes it's time for a new door.
Professorville and Old Palo Alto homes often have loose mortise locks, hinges that have been painted over many times, and doors that no longer sit square in the frame.
Wood doors swell in the wet winter and shrink during the dry summer. We plane, seal, and adjust them so they close cleanly all year.
